Cubbies

Miranda is attending AWANA this year. It is her first year and she is in Cubbies (3 and 4 yr olds). She really couldn't be more excited. It is not at our church, so I am excited for her to meet new friends and have a completely new experience.

Being the involved and responsible parent that I am, I read the brochure and saw that this week was Parent's Night. I got a sitter for Johnny so that Miranda could have my undivided attention. I pumped her up about Parent's Night and how excited I was to go and meet her friends and teachers and see what she does at Cubbies. So we head to Cubbies, camera in tow, of course. We get to the classroom door and one of her leaders is handing out a paper announcing Parent Night...next week!!! Oops! I try to not make a big deal out of it because poor Miranda has this kind of disappointed, confused (perhaps horrified) look on her face. I'm glad I am getting this "embarrassing my child" stuff out of my system before she gets too old and it really does bother her:-) She didn't seem to mind at all that I was the only parent there for "Parent's Night" once we got in the door and she introduced me to her little friend.

The little girl Miranda is standing next to her in this picture and in all of the following pictures is the friend she has been telling me about. They are both "Luv E. Lambs" so they sit at the same table. Miranda never leaves her side. Wherever "C" goes she goes. I asked Miranda why she likes her so much and she said, "because she has a nice voice, and pretty hair, and she doesn't hit". I'm not sure how much Miranda has experienced other children hitting her, but it's definitely a great quality to have in a friend.

She also told me that her favorite part of the night was snack time. Now I see why. She got a mini cupcake and a cookie!

The relay they did for game time cracked me up. It was Miranda's (and I am sure many of the others) first time to do a relay. They loved it! It was hysterical.

Here you can see the intensity of it and my second fail as a Cubbie Parent. Dan (a Cubbie graduate) was telling me that I absolutely had to sew the patches on because you could always tell whose parents hadn't sewn on the patches because they were halfway falling off. No problem, right? I mean I make clothes for Miranda I can sew a couple patches on, but we were running late and I didn't feel like lugging out my machine. I thought, "I'll iron them on and then stitch over them later, they'll last one night". Well, the first patch stayed on for the first five minutes and then the second one fell off sometime after the relay. There are supposed to be four numbers and here there are only three.

I had a great time and I can't wait for Parent's Night again next week!

The training wheels are off! It really wasn't as painful as I thought it might be (except for the factthat she is growing up way too fast). We spent a weekend in Kansas a few weeks ago and Miranda had fun practicing on a cruiser bike (a bike without pedals that you just learn to balance and glide on). I think that helped her have a lot more confidence. Dan and I just passed her back and forth couple times, and then tried the same thing down a grassy slope for longer distances. A few pushes on the pavement and she was off..."Piece of cake!"

Connecticut Vacation

We had a wonderful vacation with our friends John and Ellen Buerger and their daughter Aubrie (who will be 3 in November like Johnny). They invited us to go to the house John shares with his extended family. It is a beautiful old house with a lot of character and a lot of history. The lady (Aunt Susie) who is the main caretaker right now has 10 grandsons who frequent the house. Needless to say, there were tons of trucks, cars, and diggers that Johnny adopted as his own. The kids loved roaming free in the big yard, playing on the small beach by the river, fishing off the dock, swinging on the swing, eating outside, and just enjoying the relaxing atmosphere and slower pace. Not to mention the cooler weather, so that we could actually play outside. They got to play in the rain the first day we were there. They acted like they hadn't seen rain in a long time...wait, they hadn't seen rain in a long time!!!

Ellen and I enjoyed exploring the local Goodwill, TJ Max, Herb's Country Store, and resale shop during nap times each day in an old blue pick up truck. It didn't have any AC, but that was good for us because we live in AC 24/7 right now. John and Dan grilled up some delicious lobster! We went to the ocean one day and had a blast. The weather was perfect. Miranda found a little jellyfish that washed up on the beach. She adopted that slimy thing and held it the whole time and made a home for it in a bucket with seaweed and sand (and named it Bella:-)). She really likes slimy pets. She has loved several worms to death already.

I was a little worried about being close to the river with the kids, but Johnny only fell off the dock once (no worries, Dan was right there). This happened after he got carsick on our way out to eat and also managed to get a bead stuck in his nose, so it seemed really minor in comparison.

Here are Miranda and Johnny just come in from playing in the...ice. We didn't get much snow, but we got lots of ice pellets. I was thankful I hauled the snow pants back with us from Indiana because it has been frigid! It's actually been a few degrees colder here than in IN the past couple of days, in the teens.

We've been trying to keep busy while being iced in. On Monday Dan built a cardboard kitchen, credit for the idea given to Family Fun Magazine. I think it is so cute and it is quite possible that I enjoy looking at it more than they like playing with it and they've had a lot of fun. Johnny kept saying he was making cheese. They've also had a lot of fun with a huge box I got from the neighbor who got a new washer. Hours of fun from a cardboard box with a door cut into it! And when they tire of it, just toss it- can't beat that!

Peanut Butter, Bikes, and Valentines

The kids are just so active and unpredictable these days. They really keep me on my toes with the new things they are learning and the hilarious things they say. I just thought I would give a little summary of what they've each been up to lately.

Miranda has been busy doing extra chores or "fresh chores" as she calls them. Dan and I are using it to help teach her a little about money, since she has started asking to buy things at the store. Some of her extra chores include washing windows, folding towels and socks, and helping bring in groceries. She gets 3 dimes per chore; one for church, one for saving, and one to spend.

Miranda has also been having fun making valentines and heart crafts. Miranda loves crafts (and so does mommy). Johnny takes a longer nap than Miranda, so that gives us some nice scissor and glue time that isn't very Johnny compatible.

And oh the funny things she says! She repeatedly calls the person who works at the store "the cliff" instead of "the clerk". I hesitantly corrected her the first time because I thought it was so cute. She still does it though and I would rather just smile and relish her 3-year oldness than correct her at this point. She goes to childcare during the Wednesday night service and one of her sitters made a heart out of red pipe cleaner and stuck it in Miranda's hair. On the way home Miranda said, "I just think Miss H. is amazing because she can make hair clips for children!" In the bath the other night I gave Miranda and Johnny their goggles to play with. At one point Miranda standing up with hand on hip declared that she was "taking goggle lessons".

Johnny has started eating peanut butter sandwiches like a sandwich. Up until now I have made the sandwich as normal and then cut it up into bite-sized pieces because if I didn't he would tear the two pieces apart and lick out the middle, making a complete mess. So this week we were on a picnic at the Dallas Arboretum and I watched in amazement as he picked it up and ate it like he'd been doing it his whole life.

Johnny also hit another huge milestone this week. He started riding his two-wheeler with training wheels. He can "Fred Flintstone" it like nobody's business on his three wheeler, but we got him a big boy bike for his birthday and now how to pedal has clicked. I'll try to post some video of it soon. I can't believe it! I have to resist the urge to rip him off it and stuff the bike in the closet. Johnny, don't grow up too fast!

Lately, Johnny has been getting creative with making words plural. It started with saying "carses" instead of cars and has spread into other areas of his vocabulary. This morning when he woke up he said, "Daddy snoreses".

There is so much more. If only I could bottle it all up ... sigh.

Ice Cream Cone Christmas Trees and Johnny's FIRST Haircut

We've had fun this Christmas season making lots of goodies; puppy chow, Christmas tree cupcakes, a gingerbread house, and ice cream cone Christmas trees. Here are some pictures of the later. They did a good job of waiting to eat the candy until after it made it on the tree, but barely. Miranda was so funny when she helped me make the puppy chow. She had helped me measure and pour the chex mix and then I went to the kitchen to melt the chocolate, peanut butter and butter together. As I proceeded to pour the melted chocolaty goodness over the cereal Miranda exclaimed, "Mommy, you are (pause) AMAZING!" I think she was just overcome with the idea of chocolate being poured all over cereal:-)

It was time for Miranda to get a haircut too and we thought it might help if Johnny saw her go first. She took her haircut very seriously following every tilt of the head instruction carefully. She had this look on her face about the whole time.

Little Miss Miranda

I can't resist posting this video. EVERYDAY Miranda puts on her tutu and asks me to put on some "ballerina music". Of course, Johnny always wants to hear the "Tractor, Tractor" song, so sometimes we compromise. But this time Johnny was still taking his nap and I finally got out my camera. She's never taken a class, but she practices a whole lot. You know what they say about practicing making perfect. I think she's perfect:-)

Ballerina Field Trip

Miranda has been really into dancing and dressing up in her tutus lately. A couple months ago we went to see a REAL ballerina at the mall. It was super fun and interactive. There was background music and the ballerina had the kids following her actions and moving the entire time. Miranda didn't take her eyes off of her (as you can see in the pictures) and did a great job copying what she did. She did struggle with the jumping jacks, but then I struggle to follow someones lead doing jumping jacks.

We had a birthday party for Johnny Thanksgiving weekend. He thoroughly enjoyed every minute. It was so fun to watch him shoveling cake into his mouth with one hand and playing with the tractor from the top of his cake with the other. Check out all the pictures by clicking on this one. Aperture

I recently got new editing software called, Aperture. It's basically an advanced iPhoto. I have been experimenting with some effects (some of them I made up and some of them came with the program)on some of our Galveston photos. It's pretty fun and I am even able to cut things out of photos, like people and arms and objects. One of our friends on the trip took our family photos. He did a great job, dontcha think? Thanks Jonathan!

A Mini Vacation

We just got back from Galveston!

Here's a sneak peak of photos from the weekend.

On the drive home, I said, "woo hoo! Only 60 miles to Dallas!" I asked Miranda after four hours in the car if she was excited to almost be home. She said, "No, I like vacation." We had a great time!

I've shared some of this via facebook updates, but thought others might like to hear.

We've given Miranda our camera, that is the one before the one before our current camera. It's the one that got dropped in the pool as well as has a broken flash button. Summertime

We've been busy this so far this summer- eating ice-cream, swimming...eating ice-cream, swimming. You do what you gotta do in the Texas heat! I know it's only the beginning of June and I'm already talking about the "Texas heat". It's going to be a long summer! But the good news is that we're having lots of fun. We went to a birthday party on Saturday and Miranda got to ride a pony! (Johnny didn't want to go near the pony!) Miranda and I were talking about it the day afterward and I referred to the pony as "the little pony" and she corrected me, "No, it was a BIIIIIGGG pony!"

Johnny Jump In

Johnny loves the pool. He is a little fish! He likes to jump in from the side over and over again. We don't even have to catch him. He holds his breath until he pops up. There is a lot of anticipation and counting before each jump. When he is in the water he still has trouble moving around where he wants to go with his floats, but he is learning to kick his legs. His balance has already gotten a lot better.

Bike Riding

Check out Miranda's new skills! Miranda had really taken to the neighbor girl's new tricycle, so we decided it was time to get her a bike. I thought it would take a lot of coaxing on our part to get her to learn, but we brought it home and she road it for about an hour and a half straight. I couldn't believe how she stuck to it. She fell down a couple times and didn't even cry. Finally, it was time to go inside and when we took her helmet off her hair was drenched with sweat and her cheeks all rosy. It was all very bittersweet. I had such joy in watching her learn and be independent, but was reminded that there is no turning back with this growing up thing. I felt like she grew up quite a bit that day.

In the video she says bye to me and to Dan and then she says, "Going past you! Straight ahead". Her running commentary was so funny. One time she passed by Dan and exclaimed, "I LOVE IT!"

"That's What I'm Talking About!"

I've been pretty busy lately taking pictures--practicing my photography skills on my friends' kids (www.diedrablosserphotography.blogspot.com). But here are some of my darling lovies.

Johnny is working on saying "Please" with a calm voice and jumping with both feet off the ground...off steps...off the futon. He LOVES "bawberrisch"(strawberries). Miranda is also growing in her vocab. She continues to pick up on things Dan and I say. Her favorite song is "Hark the Herald Angels Sing". Dan was singing and rocking with her last night and when he started singing that song she stopped him and said, "That's what I'm talking about!" She has Psalm 23 memorized and is learning to trace letters. Johnny and Miranda share a room and sometimes, after we put them to bed, we hear them yelling back and forth the command to "LIE DOWN!".

Have I said here lately how incredibly sweet Johnny Boy is? He is so sweet! Full of smiles even when he is getting 8 teeth all at once. He politely folds his hands to pray and joins in with the "Amen!"- though sometimes before the prayer has finished. Tonight after I put the kids to bed I heard Miranda singing and after she finished The B-I-B-L-E, I heard Johnny shout out, "Bible!". He loves to cuddle, listen to music, make us laugh, and push his Tonka truck outside! Those dark brown eyes sparkle and shine- Johnny, you are so sweet!

Here are some more pictures of the snow we had. Supposedly some spots in the DFW area received up to a foot. I think they said Dallas got around 9 inches. It was really amazing and we went out in it as much as possible. I even pushed a stroller through thick slush and snow to enjoy it. It almost started to feel like Indiana since it stuck around for a whopping 3 days.

We woke up this morning to falling snow and it continued to snow all day long. It was a pretty wet snow, but we got around 5-6 inches. Miranda and Johnny absolutely loved it. We went out before lunch and then dried all of our stuff out and went out again after naps.

Miranda jumped right in like a pro. Her first step into the snow she laid down and made a snow angel. She could have stayed out all day, and Johnny could have too, but he was soaked through from falling down in the snow and slush.

Back from the land of Goshen...for some time now actually, but things are just now starting to get back to normal. The last couple months have been pretty crazy...Dan's broken foot, flying north by myself with two children, and the "flood of 2009" in our apartment, But we survived...

Speaking of surviving, I have taken my parenting to a whole new level of self-sacrifice and steadfastness. I have not only watched my child throw up, I have caught vomit with my bare, cupped, hands. I have been dreading the day when one of my children would throw up...it goes way back to my own childhood and my phobia of throwing up. I've always feared I would just abandon my poor sick child in their moment of desperation. But now the day has passed and I must say I wholeheartedly attended to the situation. (However, there really wasn't any place to which I could flee being wedged between two car seats in the van.) Once the adrenaline wore off I did have to pop a mint and have cold air blown in my face to ward off the nausea and anxiety, but still the fear has been met and conquered. Thought you'd like to know.

While we were in Indiana we visited good ol' Shipshewana. They have a great Carousel there. Miranda would have ridden on it all day I think. Grandma treated her to a second ride while the rest of us were in the toy store. I noticed she and the horse have similar expressions.

Yesterday we celebrated Johnny's 1st Birthday. I decided to go with a monkey theme since Johnny is such a fun and energetic guy and he really likes his "Five Silly Monkeys" book. Thought you might like to see some photos, especially his first experience with cake.

Dora the Explorer Fall Festival Edition

Miranda dressed up like Dora for the Fall Festival at our church. So we got Dan to be Diego- Dora's animal rescuing cousin and Johnny to be Boots the monkey- Dora's best friend...and we even got someone (who prefers to remain nameless) to volunteer to dress up like Swiper the Fox.

Our friend Angela came and took some family photos for us today. Here is one of my favs of the kids. I also took some 1 year pics of Johnny outside yesterday, which I'll post later. It's so pretty with the leaves on the ground and the nice weather.

Today we went to get Miranda's hair cut for the first time. She was really excited about it. I had pumped her up the night before telling her everything that was going to happen. She said, "Mommy, you talk about it", asking me to continue talking about it. In the van on the way there she asked if there was going to be a living room. Dan told her that there would be couches and a waiting area. She was pleasantly surprised to find that the "living room" had a basket with a few toys in it.

We took her to the gal that cuts Dan's hair. She was really sweet with Miranda and did a great job on her hair. They pulled out this board that goes across the armrests for a booster seat. Miranda loved everything about the haircut from the waiting "living" room to the lollipop at the end. I think her smiles tell it all.

I love how Johnny plays with Dan's hair while he sits up top for a "giraffe ride" as Dan calls it. He sat up there the whole duration of the haircut.
